So I am driving down 9th Street toward 3rd Avenue in Park Slope in an area near a number of mosques and madrassahs, and this livery cab pulls in front of me. On the back window is a symbol that I know that Al Qaeda uses. I don't know what the Arabic language is, can anyone fill me in on that?

One of the amazing things about the neighborhood in which I live and America is that, here, in Park Slope, just miles from the former site of the World Trade Center, where you could literally smell the burning towers and their inhabitants who were murdered by Muslim Jihadists, one finds thousands and thousands of Muslim living without anyone bothering them at all. It is a real tribute to America that despite the complete absence of any shame regarding the September 11th murders, despite the complete absence of any marches or rallies by American Muslims for the victims of the Muslim jihad, Muslims are able to live in peace without any problems at all. Incredible. Truly America is a great and forgiving country, but it is scary how much obvious support there is for Al Qaeda among the broader non-protesting Muslim community in Brooklyn.

I saw "Sex and Lucia" last night. As part of my continuing pathetic effort to learn Spanish, I am watching scores of Spanish language movies. It was an incredible movie, but reinforces my inclination to take a short break from Spanish movies, particularly Mexican movies (Sex and Lucia was not a Mexican movie), because I can not handle the drama and tragedy in some of these movies. It is way over the top and too depressing. Watching "The Violin," a Mexican movie, almost killed me.

Lucia y Sexo was a beautiful movie, although, for a father, terribly depressing at one point.

Well, it is nice to see that John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen M. Walt's "The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" (Farrar, Straus and Giroux), the book that argues that the Jews control US foreign policy, is now prominently featured at my local Barnes & Noble on 7th Avenue in Park Slope. I, of course, turned the book over so that people could not read the cover. It is an embarassment to my neighborhood. You can't find any conservative books, but you can find this crap.

Honestly, I really do feel like I live in 1930s Germany. The ground is being prepared by the anti-Semites and nobody notices or cares. I am sure this book is going to be a huge best seller as it dresses up the old canard of a Jewish conspiracy to takeover the world with the imprimatur of the Kennedy School of Government and 21st Century academia. I never thought that I would see such mindless drivel pedaled on the tables of local book stores in Park Slope. Geez, that Jewish conspiracy is not doing a very good job if it can't keep this nonsense of the shelves of stores in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

I can't say that I am really surprised. While this neighborhood is incredibly liberal, um, sorry, progressive, I have heard people walking down 7th Avenue in front of Connecticut Muffin denouncing Zionists and Israelis and talking about Jewish money controlling the banking system. You would never hear people in Park Slope talking about other minorities this way, but the Jews have been fair game for liberals and progressives for some time now, and you better believe that if this is the way that the libs are talking in Park Slope, which has a large and, unfortunately, progressive Jewish population, than it has to be much, much worse elsewhere in this country.

I am very, very afraid for the State of Israel. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that it is successful against Hamas before Obama becomes President. Interestingly, Obama has already caused one war, and he has not even taken office yet. This military action by Israel against Gaza is clearly a reaction to Obama becoming President in three weeks. Israel fears a lack of Obama support for its right to self-defense.

Anyway while the liberals run around fearing fundamentalist Christians, Bush feared that the little Hitler, the psychopathic, deranged nut job of Mesopotamia, the one and only chemical bombing, mass raping Saddam Hussein, might wake up someday and say, "You know what I would like to do today? I would like to give Ramzi Binalshibh and Osama bin Laden a weapon of mass destruction and see what happens."

After eight years of Bush, we don't have to worry about that scenario and for that I am very, very grateful, and I believe that history will note that Bush was a great, great president in the same way that history has noted that Reagan was a great, great president. The libs may control the media of the moment, but with time, the biases and prejudices of the chattering class will become remote and a truer review of events will take place.

There is little consensus on what is moral, let alone on what corrodes morality. A man of faith measures moral character by one's ability to abide by the demands of his God. A socialist might measure moral strength by one's dedication to the redistribution of wealth. A liberal - by which I mean a classical, Adam Smith or Milton Friedman liberal, not a liberal in its American meaning of "pro-big government" - might be religious, and he might see the merits of income equality, but he will always put freedom first. This is the moral framework to which I subscribe.

According to this school of thought, freedom of the individual is the highest aim, and the ultimate test of a person's character is his ability to pursue his own chosen goals in life without infringing upon the freedom of others to pursue their own goals. From this perspective, free economic activity among individuals, corporations, and nations boosts such desirable qualities as trust, honesty, and hard work. Producers are compelled to continually improve their goods and services. The free market establishes a meritocracy and creates opportunities for better jobs for those students who work hard at school. The same mechanism pushes parents to invest more time and money in the education of their children. Producers invest in research and innovation to beat their competitors in the marketplace.

To appreciate just how effectively the free market strengthens moral character, it is helpful to glance at economic systems that undermine or openly reject it. Everywhere Communism has been tried, for instance, it has resulted not just in corruption and sub-standard products but also in fear, apathy, ignorance, oppression, and a general lack of trust. The Soviet Union and pre-reform China were morally as well as economically bankrupt.

Or consider the feudal order typified by Saudi Arabia. There we see an absolute monarch, a religious hierarchy that reinforces the ruling family's hold on power, and several classes of serfs: the oppressed Shi'a minority, the vastly exploited underclass of immigrant workers, and women, who are confined and abused. The stagnation and oppression of Saudi society make it utterly immoral in the eyes of a classical liberal. Unlike Communism, it cannot even proffer the fig leaf of greater "fairness."

Free markets have their moral flaws. I can see why critics find it difficult to detect morality in a market system that allows young girls to earn vast wealth for swaying and warbling on TV and young men to become obscenely prosperous because they can hip-hop to drug-induced rhythmic heights. A legitimate debate also exists between proponents of entirely free markets and those who suggest that vital services such as healthcare and education require a measure of government oversight.

To my mind, the extent of government welfare services in Western Europe is excessive and counterproductive; it discourages innovation and rewards dependency, corroding moral fiber and individual responsibility by encouraging people to become lazy and dependent on the state for things they could (and should) do for themselves. In a free-market society, where liberty comes first, individuals tend to be more creative and to innovate; in welfare states that assign priority to equality, the natural resourcefulness of human beings is perverted. To become successful, you must learn how to "work the system" rather than how to develop a better product. Risk is avoided, and individual responsibility is thwarted. Although superficially the system may appear fair, it promotes mediocrity and a sense of victimhood, and it discourages those who want to excel.

Free-market societies are under fire from environmentalists today for supposedly ruining the planet. But the passionate debate about global warming and the moral implications of waste and pollution has arisen only in politically free societies. Moreover, as governments debate whether global warming is really man-made, economic actors have already begun to incorporate these concerns into their production and investment. They have begun taking measures to build more fuel-efficient cars and to create affordable systems to provide alternative sources of energy. Greener-than-thou marketing is a strong force among a certain sector of consumers. Corporations and firms do this because they are rational economic actors. Companies that are greener may actually make more profits than those that ignore environmental morality.

Are the rich always greedy? There are many wealthy, decadent, and vapid people in America. But there are also many very active philanthropists, and indeed, thanks to some of the wealthiest people in the country, there is a marked improvement in public awareness in the fight against various epidemics. The goal of wiping out malaria, for instance, might sooner be achieved by private investors than by states or UN bureaucrats.

These fortunate men and women also take pride in their contributions to such cultural goods as libraries, concerts, museums, and, lately, a cleaner planet. The very active individual philanthropy that characterizes America may be a function of the tax code, but that is interesting in itself: a well-framed free market can be more effective in improving the common good than a bloated international bureaucracy operated by governments.

For those seeking moral perfection and a perfect society, a free market is not the answer. In the course of history, the search for perfect societies - that is, the failure to acknowledge human imperfection - almost always ended in one or another form of theocracy, authoritarianism, or violent anarchy. But for those who seek to work with human flaws of every stripe, and to increase the sum total of individual happiness, the free market, combined with political freedom, is the best way.

America is imperfect, chaotic, sometimes decadent, and often rough on the weak. But its moral standards are far higher than those of history's other great powers.

While walking the dog this morning, I came across a house on 3rd Street that has draped an enormous American flag over the entire house while surrounding it with Obama signs. This is consistent with the annoying people who wander around the neighborhood talking about how much they love America because Barack Obama was elected as President. To me this summarizes the differences between conservatives and liberals. I have always loved my country for its ideals. When Bill Clinton was bending interns over his desk in the oval office and shoving cigars up the vaginas of young women, I still loved my country. When Jimmy Carter let religious zealots humiliate America, I still loved my country. My love of America is not dependent upon some uber leader or cult of personality.

Liberals, on the other hand, only love America when they have power and when their jefe is in control. The seeds of fascism have always run strongest in liberals and socialists, and I find their personality worship a bit disconcerting.

Well, we shall see. I am curious if liberals are going to start volunteering for the military now that their uber leader is in control or if they are just going to continue to let Republicans and conservatives die for this country while liberals buy material stuff. For libs, it is always about materialism. For conservatives, it is about ideals.

Well, what can I say, I called this a long time ago. I believe in gay marriage, but I have always stated that when an elite uses the court system to try to undemocratically ram their values down the throats of the electorate, they risk a massive backlash, and here it is.

When the California Supreme Court made up the constitutional right to gay marriage in the California Constitution, they almost ensured this type of backlash. People don't want to live in an oligarchy, they don't want elites telling them what to think, and they don't want to be lied to and told that there is a right to gay marriage in the California Constitution when there obviously is not.

I don't know what to say, when courts make up law like this, it disgusts me and embarrasses me as a lawyer. Would it have been so hard to try to work through the legislature and do things democratically instead of trying to use the courts to force people to accept one's views? Do we live in a democracy or in an authoritarian state? Unfortunately, many activists in America want to live in an authoritarian state and use the power of the government to dictate private behavior. Scary and undemocratic, and it always creates a backlash. This result was so obvious, it makes me wonder why the activists did it, and they have only themselves to blame for setting gay marriage back in California for decades. Nice job.

Would it be too much to ask the government to slash its workforce at the same percentage levels that private industry has to in tough times. Given that corporations such as Lehman, Bear Stearns and Goldman pay about 90 percent of all American taxes and support all of us, wouldn't it be fair that when they suffer, the public sector employees should suffer too? This would be a great opportunity to shrink government.

Oh, yeah, that's right. When you are a government employee you have a life long job and position regardless of competency, ability or efficiency. I forgot that.

Yeah, let's kill the rich and grow the public sector more and more. Of course, someday, there will be no one left to tax, but who cares, we can all live five families to a room like in the old USSR, and the only rich people will be the politicians who run everything.

I better start telling my kids to learn how to repeat the party line and look for civil service jobs because that is where the money is going to be as a tool for the government.

Well isn't this interesting. One poll has the race about even. Other polls have Obama ahead by as much as 14 points. Someone is clearly lying.

Since the MSM and the polling is so dominated by liberal democrats, I am going to assume that the poll numbers are being distorted to make Obama look better because of the liberal media bias. I think there may be hope for McCain.

The liberal elite and the money machine is trying to bury McCain and suppress the vote, but the conspiracy by the MSM to elect Obama may be falling apart. We will have to keep our fingers crossed.

In a very short period of time as VP candidate, Joe Biden has committed more gaffes and lied more than any other person in this campaign, not exactly a surprise if you know anything about the great windbag, Joe Biden. Nevertheless, as Kirstin Powers notes, Joe Biden is the MSM's idiot and Sarah Palin is not so it is all OK.

Meanwhile, don't forget Barack's unbelieveable gaffes about the number of states in the United States and his nuclear deterrence policy. If any other candidate had made such mistakes, he or she would have been dismissed as a lightweight long ago. However, when you have the protection of the MSM, you just continue to sail along with a cheery smile.

Barack Obama's choice of Joe Biden as his running mate prompted a small wave of warnings about Biden's propensity for gaffes. But no one imagined even in a worse-case scenario such a spectacular bomb as telling donors Sunday to "gird your loins" because a young president Obama will be tested by an international crisis just like young President John Kennedy was.

Scary? You betcha! But somehow, not front-page news.

Again the media showed their incredible bias by giving scattered coverage of Biden's statements.

There were a few exceptions. On MSNBC's "Morning Joe," co-host Mika Brzezinski flipped incredulously through the papers, expressing shock at the lack of coverage of Biden's remarks. Guest Dan Rather admitted that if Palin had said it, the media would be going nuts.

So what gives?

The stock answer is: "It's just Biden being Biden." We all know how smart he is about foreign policy, so it's not the same as when Sarah Palin says something that seems off.

Yet, when Biden asserted incorrectly in the vice-presidential debate that the United States "drove Hezbollah out of Lebanon," nobody in the US media shrieked. (It was, however, covered with derision in the Middle East.) Or when he confused his history by claiming FDR calmed the nation during the Depression by going on TV, the press didn't take it as evidence that he's clueless.

And Biden is the foreign-policy gravitas on the Democratic ticket, so his comments are actually even more disconcerting.

The outakes of his Sunday remarks don't begin to capture the magnitude of what he said. After warning the crowd that there would be some sort of international incident - Biden could think of four or five scenarios - he told the donors: "We're gonna need you to use your influence, your influence within the community, to stand with him. Because it's not gonna be apparent initially, it's not gonna be apparent that we're right."

What does that mean? Obama's election would provoke an international incident because of his inexperience and even Obama's biggest supporters won't be reassured by his response?

Then there were Biden's predictions on the economy: "I promise you, you all are gonna be sitting here a year from now going, 'Oh my God, why are they there in the polls? . . . Why is this thing so tough? . . . I'm asking you now, be prepared to stick with us. Remember the faith you had at this point, because you're going to have to reinforce us.

"There are gonna be a lot of you who want to go, 'Whoa, wait a minute, yo, whoa, whoa, I don't know about that decision.' "

Biden is teling us that, at a time when Americans need to feel confidence in their government, they will be going "Oh my God." Not a great message.

Needless to say, if Sarah Palin said this about a McCain administration, the media world would be exploding.

Whether you believe Biden is exaggerating, as he is known to do, or is providing real insight, the double standard in the media does even more damage to their lagging brand.

Part of the problem is their "Obama love," but we're also seeing the media elite's belief - prejudice - that anyone with an R behind their name is dumb. So, if they say something dumb, they must be dumb. A Democrat, like Biden, can make wildly inaccurate or outrageous comments and they are ignored because the TV and press insiders feel they "know who he really is."

On the stump recently, Sen. Biden declared he had "three words" for what the nation needs: "J-O-B-S."

Lucky for him, his name isn't Dan Quayle, or that would have followed him for the rest of his career.

IF the prospect of Joe Biden sitting a heartbeat away from the presidency doesn't give you palpitations, you're not paying attention.

Hysterical Sarah Palin-bashers on the unhinged left and elitist right have dominated campaign press coverage and pop culture. They've ridiculed her family, her appearance and her speech patterns. They've derided her character, her parenting skills, her readiness and her intellect.

Meanwhile, the increasingly erratic, super-gaffetastic Joe Biden gets a pass. What does the guy have to do to earn the relentless scrutiny and merciless mockery he deserves? Answer: Wear high heels, shoot caribou and change the "D" next to his name to an "R."

Team Obama is hammering John McCain as "erratic" in the campaign's closing days. Use the search terms "erratic McCain," and you get 615,000 Google hits (and counting). Last week, The New York Times devoted an entire article to the Obama-Biden line of attack, headlined: "In Friendly Region, Biden Cites McCain as Erratic."

Who's erratic? Throughout the primary and general election cycles, Biden has lurched from attacking Obama as not ready for prime time (September 2007: "The presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.") to ready to lead (August 2008: "Barack Obama is ready. This is his time.") - and now back again.

This week, Biden warned America that an Obama victory would invite a dangerous global showdown between tyrants and the naif Obama. "Mark my words," Biden said Sunday. "It will not be six months [after the inauguration] before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy."

Tooting his own horn while vandalizing his running mate's, Biden bragged: "I've forgotten more about foreign policy than most of my colleagues know." Yeah. Colleagues like that guy who had a mere 143 days of Senate experience before launching his presidential bid and choosing you to shore up his meager credibility, Joe.

In fact, Biden has spent the entire campaign questioning his running mate's judgment. Last month, he mused out loud: "Hillary Clinton is as qualified or more than I am to be vice president of the United States of America. . . . She is easily qualified to be vice president of the United States of America, and quite frankly it might have been a better pick than me."

Biden assailed the campaign's position on clean coal, openly criticized its idiotic ad attacking McCain for not using e-mail and warned the pro-gun-control Obama: "If he tries to fool with my Beretta, he's got a problem."

Nightly news shows still haven't tired of replaying Palin's infamous interview with Katie Couric. But how many times have they replayed Biden's botched interview with Couric last month - in which he cluelessly claimed: "When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn't just talk about the, you know, the princes of greed. He said, 'Look, here's what happened.' " Er, what really happened is: Roosevelt wasn't president when the market crashed in 1929. And TV was in its infant stages, not available to the general public until at least 10 years later.

During the VP debate, Biden demonstrated more historical ignorance that Palin would never be allowed to get away with: "Vice President Cheney . . . doesn't realize that Article I of the Constitution defines the role of the vice president of the United States, that's the executive - he works in the executive branch. He should understand that. Everyone should understand that." Article I covers the legislative branch, not the executive. You'd think someone who has served 36 years in government - and is quick to remind others of his high IQ and longtime Senate Judiciary Committee chairmanship - would know better.

Biden's erratic and gaffetastic behavior is the least of America's worries. He's an incurable narcissist with chronic diarrhea of the mouth. He's a phony and a pretender who fashions himself a foreign-policy expert, constitutional scholar and worldly wise man. He's a man who can't control his impulses.

And he could be a heartbeat away.

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. 'Since you are all such good customers, he said, 'I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so t he first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share?' They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% saving s).

Each of the ten was better off than before; and the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. 'I only got a dollar out of the $20', declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,' but he got $10!' 'Yeah, thatʼs rightʼ, exclaimed the fifth man. 'I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than I!' 'That's true!!' shouted the seventh man. 'Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!' 'Wait a minute,' yelled the first four men in unison. 'We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!' The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn't show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. T he people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

I respectfully note that Obama is lying, yet again, when he claims that he did not know that Powell was going to endorse him on Meet the Press. I also note that Powell is lying when he said that he did not know if he would get a position in an Obama administration and was not sure if he would accept one. Basically, Powell's entire endorsement was a job interview and acceptance by Obama.

Finally, I am not sure that I have ever seen a performance as despicable as Powell's on Sunday. Among other reasons, Powell suggested that he was voting for Obama because he did not like the tone of McCain's campaign, and he did not like the whispers that he had heard from some Republicans that Obama was a Muslim. (Who are these Republicans? Don't you think Powell should name names?). In other words, Powell does not want to vote for McCain because Republicans are racists. This may be one of the most vicious slanders from an allegedly intelligent man that I have ever heard.

After all, anyone who has maintained a pulse for the last year knows that the vicious Muslim rumors were started and spread by Hillary Clinton and Democratic Party hacks during the Democratic primary. Furthermore, the rumors that Michelle Obama used the comment "whitey" was spread by another Hillary Clinton blogger. Clearly, there are extremists among both the Democrats and Republicans who feel that Obama's years of schooling in an Islamic Madrassah as a young boy in Indonesia make him a Muslim. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Democrats and Republicans do not feel that Obama's Islamic education make him a Muslim. Clearly, he made a decision, instead, to be the follower of a crackpot racist black liberation theologian Christian. Obama is not a Muslim. He is the decades long follower of a Christian racist who was his guidance in all things moral. The evidence is clear.

Having said that, for Powell to suggest that these Muslim rumors are a Republican problem, when it is Democrats who started spreading them a year ago in Florida, is despicable. There is no place in the Republican Party for such a craven political hack, and I hope he leaves the party and takes his racial pandering to the Democrats. Clearly, Powell knows how to make false accusations of racial animus with the best of the Democrats. He deserves them.

Oh, yeah, I forgot. Obama is a "transformational" figure, you know, like Jesus Christ. Has everyone lost their minds?
